KATE MOSS & LUCIAN FREUD — HAMPSTEAD

Sometimes the photograph you come back with isn't the one you were sent to take.

I was in Hampstead covering a story connected with Noel Gallagher, who at the time lived at the well-known Supernova Heights.

While waiting near Sadie Frost's home, I spotted Kate Moss at the gate greeting Lucian Freud. I photographed the encounter — an unexpected picture that subsequently took on far greater significance as the story of Moss's friendship with Freud and his portrait of her became widely known.

The photograph was distributed through Rex Features and has continued to be published internationally over the years. More than two decades later, it has found a new audience with the release of Moss & Freud, the film dramatising their relationship.

It's a good example of something I learned repeatedly during my years working in editorial photography: you could be sent out looking for one story and find another happening right in front of you.
